Apache Geronimo is now a fully certified J2EE 1.4 application server with the release of
version 1.1.1. Since this release, many developers have become serious about moving away
from building their software applications on top of restrictive platforms.
Specifically, there are a number of articles and tutorials online that describe
migrating away from the JBoss application server to Apache Geronimo. Many of these techniques are effective
but painful solutions to migration. We've now taken it to the next level and have eased if not eliminated many
of these current migration pains.
Covalent is pleased to announce the availability of the J2G Migration Tool. Covalent, IBM and the Geronimo Communinity have developed an
easy to use tool to help enterprise customers easily migrate applications from the JBoss
Application Server to the open source Apache Geronimo J2EE Application Server.
The JBoss migration tool converts applications built for JBoss to Apache Geronimo
by generating the appropriate configuration files.
The J2G Migration Tool consists of three components:
- Descriptors Conversion Tool: converts JBoss specific deployment descriptors and J2EE standard deployment descriptors (if necessary) to their Geronimo equivalents.
- Resource Conversion Tool: converts JBoss specific resources, such as JMS Queue, JMS Topic, JDBC data source, etc., to their Geronimo equivalents.
- Source Identification Tool: scans the source code (Java source files, JSP, etc.) to identify the code that will require changes.
The tools will process J2EE 1.4 and below applications, as well as the applications that fail to adhere to J2EE standards.
The tool is available free of charge on the Apache Software Foundation website and is being
distributed under the business friendly Apache 2.0 license. Download the J2G Migration Tool today. It's freely available on the Geronimo website at http://geronimo.apache.org.
