Terracotta Sessions

Terracotta Sessions is a simple, drop-in product that dramatically improves HTTP session clustering performance and availability for Tomcat and WebLogic Server users. Plus, Terracotta Sessions is the first clustering product that is available for free and can be deployed in 30 minutes.

Most Java/J2EE applications in production require clustering. From the application server to the loadbalancer, most companies need high-availability and failover. However, most solutions force developers to choose between performance and availability. Worse, once developers try to scale applications beyond one node, extra coding or complex APIs are required to cluster session state. These solutions use Java serialization that impacts the domain model and breaks object identity.

Because Terracotta Sessions clusters the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), instead of the application, there is no coding or tuning during development. Java serialization is no longer necessary because only the data changes are transmitted between JVMs. This is how Terracotta achieves high-availability and linear scalability. With Terracotta Configurator, users finally have a powerful tool that makes session replication quick and painless. Developers can easily replicate sessions to other servers for high-availability without sacrificing performance and scalability.

Terracotta Sessions can plug-in to an “off-the-shelf” JVM and clusters at the JVM level to provide a simple runtime solution. With Terracotta Sessions, developers can now purchase inexpensive, non-clustered application servers or use open source application servers and see an immediate improvement in performance and scalability. Terracotta Sessions runs Apache Tomcat 5.0 and 5.5 with HotSpot JRE 1.4 or JRE 1.5 on Windows XP.
